PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language test aimed at non-native English speakers wanting to study abroad. PTE Academic offers fast and flexible English testing with the ability for the candidates to schedule their test as little as twenty-four hours in advance, and typically receive their results within five business days.
PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of academic programs worldwide, including prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, INSEAD and Yale University to name a few. Questions often test 2 skills together, such as listening and reading or reading and speaking. The whole test is done in a single session lasting up to 3 hours and is taken on computer in a secured test environment. The speaking part of the exam is also conducted using computer as well done to record your voice and send for marking.
To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test center. You will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.
During the three-hour test session, there are three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (together), listening and reading. There is also an optional 10-minute break between the reading and listening parts. During the test, you will find twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choices through to essay writing and interpreting information.
PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic English, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.

PTE Academic is scored on a scale of 10 – 90 where 10 is lowest, with increments of 1 point. Graded on the scale, the score showcase the person’s ability to read, speak, understand verbal instructions and write the English language. The scores are presented in a graph, giving an easy understanding of the candidate’s core skills in the language as well as improvement areas.
