IELTS
IELTS – International English Language Testing System

IELTS is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. It is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment.

IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. The test is offered in over 1200 locations, in more than 140 countries. Over 10000 organisations worldwide accept IELTS as a proof of language ability.

How does IELTS work?

IELTS has been developed by some of the world’s leading language assessment experts and will test the full range of English skills needed for success in your new job or study placement abroad. You’ll be assessed on the following elements:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The test is designed to reflect the sort of language spoken every day in an English-speaking country and even covers variations such as British English, American and Australian English. Part of the assessment is a real-life conversation that will allow you to communicate effectively with English speakers across the globe.

IELTS test formats

There are two versions of the test, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The formats of these tests are slightly different, but all test takers will still be assessed on the same four skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training. This approach is widely supported by the institutions that recognise IELTS.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.
