Visa interview is an important step prior to the final confirmation of student visa approval for most countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, UK and USA. Your interview could fasten or delay your visa processing. Therefore, it is crucial that you prepare for the interview and address all concerns of the visa officer.
The interview is taken by the ambassador or visa officer who may ask you a range of questions mainly to ensure that your application case is genuine and your intentions align with what is being written in the application form. The officer is a trained professional, who could ask multiple unrelated questions, not to annoy you but to know your real interests and objectives. If you are prepared, you can enjoy this process and meeting with someone who opens the door of a new country for you.
A few visa interview tips:
- Prepare for the interview questions in advance.
- Get a copy of your all documents with you for the interview.
- Dress appropriately (formally).
- Be on time for the interview.
- Be courteous, friendly and polite throughout the interview.
- Be confident as you the best about yourself, where and why you have made applications.
- Give brief and clear answers. If not sure, then you can ask the question again. Be thoughtful in your answers.
- Go through the website and handbook of your university carefully.
- Know bout your course contents thoroughly including course duration, fee, commencement & end date, credits points etc.
- You should be clear about your future plans after completing the course.
- Be ready for any strange questions and don’t get nervous when you have them. They are meant to test your intentions, skills or IQ.
- Interview may take 20-30 minutes or more, so be comfortable with it.

Preparatory interview questions for the Student Visa Interview:
Introductory questions:
- How are you doing?
(This Question to make you comfortable)
- Have you ever been to the respective country before?
(This is for the visa officer’s records – If yes then it is advisable to remember the date of last arrival and departure from the country of visa application)
Questions on your intention and motivation of study in the respective country:
- Why do you want to study in the respective country?
(It is to check your intention to go to the respective country)
- Why did you select this particular university?
(It is to check you have done your research about your education and serious about it)
- Which are the other universities you have applied to?
(It is to check whether you are really serious about your education and have planned well)
Questions on your subject and course:
- For which course you are going?
(It is to check that you know about what you have applied for)
- Why did you choose this course?
(It is to check that you have chosen your course by yourself)
- Why don’t you do this course here in India?
(It is to know whether this course is available here and which differences motivate you to visit the respective country – bring out the difference between the course offered in India and abroad; State the difference in terms of theoretical and practical education)
- What are the course commencement and completion dates?
(Remember the exact start and end date of the course)
Questions on funding for study in the respective country:
- How are you going to fund your education?
(It is to check you are aware of your funds and how you will manage your finances during your course duration)
- Who is sponsoring your education?
(If you have a scholarship, then say that. Otherwise mention the name of your sponsors. If they are your parents then mention that your father and/or mother are supporting you as per the financial documents [My father and relatives - As per Visa documents & Funds])
- What does s/he (mother/father) do?
(Visa officer basically wants to verify the financial capability of the sponsors. Go through the tax documents, all bank statements and other supporting documents, and have a good idea of the income source of your sponsors)
- What savings does your family have?
(Visa officer wants to confirm you have sufficient funds. Show your proofs and be sure that you know your financial documents.)
- What is your father’s annual income?
(This is just to get the idea if your father’s annual income is sufficient enough to meet your expenses of studying abroad)
- How many brothers and sisters do you have?
(Such questions are asked to evaluate the balance of income and expenses of the family)
- Do you have enough funds while you are there?
(Give a confident answer stating that you meet the educational expenses.)
Questions on academic qualifications of the student:
- What is your undergraduate GPA?
(Convert your percentage in GPA and remember it exactly)
- Can you show me your degree?
(Only show the document that has been asked)
- Mention some professors’ name?
(Give names of professors you know and explain your relation with them)
- Show me your GRE and TOEFL Score?
(Keep your documents in order and remember that, so that when they ask you again, you give them without wasting any time. Saving time counts a lot)
Questions on students achievements:
- Tell me something about your past?
(It is to know you more – mention what you were doing after your last school till today.
Make sure your answers cover your achievements, skills and sincerity)
- From where did you do your under graduation?
(It is to know your study background – mention the name of your university and course. If the university has any high ranking then mention that too)
- Are you getting any school waiver?
(It is to check your excellence – if you have got any tuition fee waiver or teaching assistantship or research assistantship then mention it)
- Why do you think the university is giving scholarship to you?
(It is to check your sharpness – most scholarships are awarded for good academic records, GRE or TOEFL scores)
Questions on awareness of and living arrangements in the respective:
- Where do you plan to stay in the respective country?
(Mention the address and arrangements for your education abroad)
- Do you have any relative in the respective country?
(Be truthful at this instance)
- Is your brother/sister enjoying there?
(Never answer in a way that makes them believes that they plan to settle or overstay)
- What do you plan to do during your vacations?
(Give a plan to show your ties up with your family and country. Don’t show your intention for work)
- What is the location of your university?
(Know the exact location of your university and whether it is the reason to go there)
Questions on future plans:
- What are your future plans? Do you intend to stay in the respective country?
(Your answers should reflect clarity of your thoughts and intentions. Mention your strong ties to the home country, and excellent opportunities available in India to establish your business or career)
- Do you plan to work there?
(Convince the officer that your intention is not to stay in the respective country permanently. You have your liabilities at home and your family is in India, for whom you would like to come back to)
- What’s the difference you can make by doing your course in the respective country?
(Prepare for this answer that suit best to your profile and course.
You can mention about better job opportunities and future prospects.)
*Respective country is the country where you intend to go for further studies.

I have just given my interview my newzealand student visa … and m not satisfied wid few of my answers… I started very well.. was answering to the point… but in between I took pauses… I dont knw… I guess out of 15-16 questions.. i did not gave my best in 4-5 questions… I got nervous…

I have done Bachelors in physiotherapy with 61 % and have 5 years clinical work experience. i applied in various univ for july 2013 intake in australia for masters in public health (coursework for 2 years) and got offer from Griffith, UTS, UQ, UWA, and La Trobe univ. Got band 7 overall in ielts academic module with 6.5-L, 7.0-R, 7.0-W and 6.5-S in MARCH 2013.

Hi Im at present in student Visa in New Zealand for studying Post graduate Diploma. I have failed the course since i havnt obtained enough credits for obtaining the degree. The university suggested me to go for a graduate diploma and gave an offer.

While applying for higher studies in New Zealand it is recommended that you should increase your level of studies. We recommend you to reappear the IELTS exams and take up studies at Graduate Diploma level.

I have done my 12th in mpc (2008) and went to australia (2009) for 2 cookery course in swinburn. I later got influenced by my friends and joined brighton institute . I came back to India without collecting certificates from brighton as i dint pay any fee . I came back in feb 2011 as dad was hospitalized for his heart problem. then I worked for GE for 1 year during which I was feeling really bad for not completing what i had gone there for so i applied for canada for diploma hospitality course but got rejected saying i have gap in education and in suffcient funds as we showed less than 6 mnths old FD as per my cnsultancy asked me. I now applied for New Zealand for bachelors course in hosipitality in AIS St Helens.
I have got my bank loan 15 lakhs approved by nationalized bank and rs 10 lakhs depositing in FTS. please suggest me if i can go ahead as i am really nervous after the rejection i had.

You are already a Master’s student, then why do you want to go for PG diploma again. Go for Master’s only.

I applied for double Masters to Australia and my application has already received by the Austalian High Commission and they took my interview through telephone on 18-09-2012, the interview went for 40 minutes they mainly concetrated on my course and jobs. Yes it is a good University. After getting COE you will apply in AHC for Visa, it will depend pn your interview performance. By getting your CoE your admission is confirmed but not the Visa, you still have to perform and prepare your file well for Visa.

Interview may or may not come, but you should be prepared for that. FTS is not compulsory so no problems.

dear Sir, I went to UK on third february2010 as a student. my visa end date was 31 july 2011. i applied for my extension in UK on 28 july 2011. BUT my file was refused. there was two refusals 1… you have applied for extension more than one month ( my visa was ending on 31 july 2011 and my course starting date was 12 september 2011 so that was about 44 days) THE other one was that your CAS did,nt show the previous progress. I was again refused in appeal So i come back to pakistan within 28 days legally. Now i again want to go UK for study. For Proof you have to show your work experience letter and Letter of Recommendation. If you are sponsoring yourself then ITR’s are required. If your father is sponsoring then his ITR’s are required. Why your friend is sponsoring, third party sponsorers are not recommended.

As proof you have to provide Experience letter and Letter of Recommendation. If you are sponsoring yourself then your ITR is required if yout parents are sponsoring then there ITR is required. Overll 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 then you can apply for Canadian Study Visa.
Friend as a sponsor is not recommended. It has to be someone in your blood relation.

Chances will all depend on your academic marks, how you prepare visa file, how much funds you show, what you write in SOP. If everything is as per the guidelines then visa will not be a problem.

For better chances of Visa, kindly appear for your IELTS again. 5.5 bands is low.

5.5 bands is acceptable but it is recommended that you appear for IELTS again if you are going for Master’s course. Otherwise you will have to study 20 weeks of ELICOS. Spouse can accompany you.
These days AHC is giving Visa to only those students who are Genuine Temporary Entrant(GTE) and with high IELTS score.

Whatever fees is written on website go by that. If your Agent says that fees has increased ask him to show you in written.

No its not at all good to go for HURRY BURRY, study abroad decisions are never taken in Hurry. It’s a very big investement you are doing, you will be paying lacs of fees so everything has to be planned and before time.
According to us 10th August is too early and upon that you already have 2 rejections so we would advise to think 100 times before finalising. Australian student visa is not easy lot of preperation is required for that regarding your funds, SOP, Interview etc. If you are planning Australia then try for Feb2013 intake so that you have ample time for preperations.

After 2009 there is a study gap? you need to justify that gap for better chances of Visa. since you already have 2 rejections it will be taken into consideration at the time of Australian Visa. In Australia you have to proove yourself as GTE, if you can do that then you wil get the Visa.

Information you have given is very limited to explain you in detail. However, there are few Universities that might consider your applicaton for direct Master’s course but then there are certain conditions to it like: Name of the college from where you have done your Diploma, level of the Diploma, what kind of experience you have etc.

As you have done Bachelors of commerce so apply to the course realted to your background , like Business , accounts , finance etc . Mininmum 6.5 bands is required for masters , They will give you minimum 20 weeks of Elicos before your main course starts .

I had interview 4 days back i was little nervous while giving ans but i had given good ans about my self my family n contents but in some ques i was really nervous she knew that she repeated again and again atlast i told her i m nervous she also asked me my nervousness effected my ans i said may be may nt be.

I have applied for nz student visa in start of april. my querry is i have completed my degree in2010 in hotel management nd i am nt workini since than. i got a mail frm INZ asking about what i did for 2 years? and i genuinely replied them back sayin that i workd in hotel 4 season for 3 mnths in nov 2010 to jan 2010 and dan i quit as i dint like the environment and for my interest in further studies. now today is 18th working day aftr i filed visa and no response frm their end. what shal i consider dis as? are there chances for rejection? plz reply ASAP.

No its not that you will get the rejection, their maximum processing time is 12 weeks. If your information provided by you is correct their is a chance to get the visa
Hi Sir, I applied for New Zealand Student Visa one month ago. My IELTS score is 6.0 overall. But the problem is the Gap in my studies. I completed my graduation in 2010 and my i secured 79%, i applied in April 2012. So will this 2 years of Gap is an issue despite good percentage ?? Will i get rejected for my 2 years of Gap?? Please Help.
If you had given logical resons in you statement of purpose justifying your gap then their will be no problems

i got 6.o overall band in ielts exam passed in nov-2011,i want to apply for new Zealand student visa, i have good academic career but problem is my gap. i have completed my b.com in 2007, after that i done tally course which was 4 months than i went muscat (gulf) on visit visa to meet my brother who is settled in muscat.than i came back after 3 months, i done job in here 8 months in private company as cashier/computer operator.after that i went muscat again and worked there 1 year, i have work experience as accountant in muscat,i came back india in nov-09, so my gap is may be at least 2 year,but now i want to apply NZ for student visa, can i apply this? please reply me.
